Mid-South Rocket SOciety

The Sky’s the Limit

WELCOME!

Mid-South Rocket Society (MSRS) is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of hobby rocketry in the Mid-South.  We encourage and support participation in rocketry at all levels, from beginners launching their first low-power rockets to experienced rocketeers launching complex high-powered rockets.

MSRS was founded in 1996 and is National Association of Rocketry (NAR) Section #550.  MSRS conducts all launches in strict conformance with the applicable NAR safety rules.  MSRS also conducts its launches in conformity with applicable Federal Aviation Administration rules.

MSRS supports local groups who desire to conduct model rocketry launches (schools, church groups, and other civic organizations) as well as supporting the national America Rocketry Challenge (ARC).

Our launches are open to spectators and groups.   Guests may launch rockets with MSRS at three launches prior to being required to join the club.  All MSRS members are required to be members in good standing with the National Association of Rocketry (NAR).

Flight Cards

A Flight Card is required for each launch you plan to make during the next launch.  To make this easier please complete one for each launch you are planning to make. You can download the cards from here. Then handwrite on them or use your computer and enter the data and print them out.  If you can’t do that, don’t worry, we will have printed copies available at the launch site.

The Flight Cards are a full page with a Pre-Flight Checklist that is to be completed by the flier prior to the Safety Check.

Launches

Launches are conducted at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tennessee. Our launch site is located 1/4 mile west of Farm Road, adjacent to Gardener Road. Our launch site is located west of the bison range on the northwest section of the park.

Launch Site Rules

All launches are conducted in conformance with NAR safety codes. No one is allowed to be in the vicinity of the launch pad when the pad is armed. Parental or guardian supervision of children is required at all times. No alcoholic beverage consumption will be permitted during a launch. Smokers must maintain a minimum distance of 25 feet at all times from any rocket motors. Disposable recovery wadding must be fire retardant and biodegradable.

MSRS launches are conducted with an FAA approved altitude waiver of 6,000 feet MSL (5,700 feet from ground level). The section maximum permitted motor size is a “J” motor, unless approval is received two weeks prior to the scheduled launch from the Section President for use of a larger motor. Use the Get in Touch link below website page for approval.

In the event of an MSRS launch being conducted without an FAA approved waiver, rockets will not be permitted to exceed an altitude of 1,500 feet, must weigh less than 3.3 pounds, and may not contain more than 125 grams of propellant.

If you are planning to join us for one of our scheduled Class 2 launches and are needing to do Level 1 or Level 2 certification launch, please notify us using the Get in Touch link below page two weeks prior to the scheduled launch.
